Common Career Paths for Art & Computation Majors

If you are still trying to explore and evaluate your career path, you can check out this selected list of common job titles related to the discipline. Please keep in mind, this is not meant to be exhaustive. Rather, you can consider it a starting point to explore options in the field. 

Creative Technologist - Blend art and technology to create interactive experiences, installations, or digital products. Often prototypes with code and hardware.

New Media Artist -  Explore and utilize cutting-edge technologies (AR, VR, AI) as part of an independent artistic practice. Work might be exhibited and sold in a variety of settings ranging from galleries, museums, public spaces, art fairs, private commissions, and more.

UI/UX Designer - Specialize in user interface (UI) and user experience (UX) design for digital products such as websites and apps, ensuring that they are functional, easy to use, and visually engaging. Might be done while working for a company, consulting firm, or via freelancing.

Interaction Designer - Design interactive experiences, such as virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) applications, focusing on engaging and immersive user experiences.

Game Designer / Developer - Design game mechanics, rules, and player experiences. Use code to build games using engines like Unity or Unreal Engine. May also create the physical layout, flow, and pacing of game environments.

Researcher - Study how computers and technology support human creativity. This work is often in academic or corporate R&D settings, and may require an advanced degree.

Experience Designer - Crafts environments or stories that engage users across senses using tech like projection mapping or haptics. May utilize skills in user experience (UX) design, physical computing, interaction design, and spatial design.

AR / VR / XR Designer - Design elements across extended reality focusing on user interaction and immersion, often blending technical knowledge with design principles. May done working for a company that specializes in AR, VR, or XR experiences and hardware.

Interactive Exhibit Designer -  Create interactive and tech-based exhibits for educational or artistic institutions such as museums, galleries, science centers, zoos, and more. May be done working in-house for those entities or at a design studio specializing in that work.

Visual Effects Artist -  Create digital effects and enhancements to video or film productions using specialized technology and software.

Parametric Designer - Use parametric and algorithmic software tools  to explore form in industries like architecture and product manufacturing. Use programmable data to drive various types of architectural or product design.

Digital Fabrication Specialist -  Creates physical forms using digital tools like 3D printing, CNC, or laser cutting. May work in product manufacturing spaces, maker spaces, R&D settings, or advanced fabrication labs.

Entrepreneur / Founder - Start one's own design-related business or product line, leveraging their design skills to create and market innovative products or services.

Art / Design Educator - Teach art and design concepts and skills at various levels, often through work in educational settings such as schools, colleges, universities, community art centers, and museums.
